The automatic association when a person thinks of a brand, they think of a company.  Frequently enough people never associate themselves with being a brand.   Well I am here to rock your world and show you a new light, because you my friend are most certainly a brand.  One of my favorite quotes is from Jay Z when he featured on Kanye West’s song, “Diamonds From Sierra Leone”… “I’m not a businessman, I am business, man!” He gets it, which is why his net worth $500 million dollars.  He also taught Beyonce how he did it, which is why her net worth is also $500 million dollars.  Together the Carter’s have built a billion dollar empire and it doesn’t look like they are slowing down anytime soon.  So what is the secret sauce to building a brand that ultimately turns into an iconic empire?  I think I may have finally nailed the ingredients on the secret menu.

  • Be consistent: Consistency, trust and loyalty are the three main factors that keep top brands at the top. Especially in today’s world where people are accessible at the click of a button.  Who you say you are, really has to be who you are.   Prime example of this would be social media, make sure your social media accounts reflect the person you are at work, around your family and on other social media platforms.  Rule of thumb that I like to use, is would my grandmother approve if she saw this?   There is nothing wrong with being young and living life to the fullest, just keep in mind everything doesn’t need to be on the Internet.  Be trustworthy and do what you say you are going to do.  In the sales world, the motto is “under promise and over deliver” this advice will never lead you wrong and with each promise people will learn to trust you more and more.  Stay loyal to those who are loyal to you and don’t forget about the people that supported you from the beginning.  If you consistently work on making your family, friends and tribe feel special, they will only help you get to the next level and will be forever supportive along your journey

  • Upgrade yourself: To hang with the big dogs, you have to be able to talk the talk and walk the walk.  I am not saying go into debt to keep up with the perception or lose who are just to fit in the crowd.  I am actually suggesting that you just play their game.  The best way to do that is to be extremely knowledgeable, know what is going on the world and coach yourself to be a leader in conversations.  Ladies, men still hold the majority of the seats at the table the higher you climb the ladder, so in order not to shoved off, you have to talk their talk and become “one of the guys” without actually becoming one of the guys.  Let me break it down for you:
    • Topics you should start taking interest in, if you don’t find them interesting already [this is listed by importance]
      • Sports: If you are able to know about sports (even baseball), key players, coaches and speak knowledgably about them, this is like the fast pass at Disneyland on a Saturday in July.  The best way to stay up on current sports headlines, is to put on your local sports talk morning radio show.  It’s interesting, doesn’t require much effort and is a great way to bypass time in the car to and from work.  I would also recommend checking out the Players Tribune, it features great content and stories and is the talk of the sports world right now.
      • Politics:  This is a topic men love to talk about, but you have to tread the water carefully with this one.  You don’t want to come off like you are forcing your views or offending anybody.  If you stick to having a basic understanding of tax laws and a few of the larger policies congress is trying to pass, you are typically in good shape.
      • Your Industry: This is where we excel!  You may or may not be too interested in sports or politics, but it is safe to say you work in an industry you are at least interested in.  You should know EVERY topic of discussion when it comes to the industry you work in, being silent during these conversations can definitely rule you out and ruin your credibility.
      • Family: If you are still brushing up on your sports and politics and can’t join the main conversation, your best bet is to start a side conversation about your/their family with the person next to you, only if they also aren’t engaged in the conversation.  This will save you every time.

  • Become a social butterfly:  Everyone loves the life of the party, but even if that isn’t you (it certainly isn’t me), people like to have good conversations and connect with nice and friendly people.  When you are networking ask the person you are holding a conversation with questions until you find a common interest that you can expand on.  Typically one of these questions below will enable you to deepen the conversation, then wah-la, you made a new connect!
    • Where are you from?
    • What brings you out/to town?
    • What do you do?

  •  Look your best: Think back to a time where you exuded the utmost confidence and had no problem walking up to anyone and starting a conversation.  Then think about what you were wearing.  We are our most confident when we look our best, which boils down to being fashionable and being healthy.  Whatever it is that you decide to wear each day, make sure it is something that make you feel slightly diva-ish.

  • Work your butt off:  You have to want it bad enough in order to get where you are going.

There it is! The secret Bey-Jay formula to building your brand and empire!  Can’t wait to see you at the top.
